The Nidek NT 4000 instrument measures the Intra Ocular Pressure (shorten as IOP) that is the pressure inside the eye that is maintained within a narrow range through a complex process of production and elimination of fluid within the anterior chamber of the eye
The measurement of IOP is one of the three tests used to detect the presence of glaucoma (a blinding condition with little symptoms until well advanced) and in the preventive approach identify the presence of increased risks of developing glaucoma.
The Tonometer (general name for all instruments measuring IOP) measures the eye pressure. The Nidek NT 4000 measures the IOP by producing a puff of air, which is reflected by the front of the cornea. The measurement of that reflection is linked to the eye pressure and gives an instantaneous measurement of the IOP in millimeter of mercury. Because of the non-contact nature of the measurement the instrument is called a Non contact Tonometer. The Nidek NT 4000 non-contact tonometer is a new and unique instrument, which synchronises the measurement with the blood pulse and eliminates in that way the problems of this class of instrument associated with variation in ocular blood flow.
