Confocal Microscope
Confocal Microscope
The Nidek CS4 confocal microscope is a very high magnification instrument that allows to photograph individual cells of the corneal from the outermost layer (the epithelium) through its bulk (the stroma) up to its outermost layer (the endothelium).  Analysis of the fine structure of the cornea is used to monitor the evolution of corneal diseases and  / or to ensure that the cornea is totally normal.

At MICHEL GUILLON the confocal microscope is used for a range of reasons:

  • Patients with suspected corneal conditions are assessed by confocal microscopy to decide upon referral to an ohthalmologist
  •   All patients that are referred for refractive surgery are assessed by confocal microscopy as part of the presurgical examination prior to referral to The London Vision Clinic.  To our knowledge MICHEL GUILLON is the only clinic that systematically carries out confocal microscopy to study the health of the cornea at the cellular level prior to refractive surgery
  • MICHEL GUILLON examine's patients referred by ophthalmological colleagues for confocal microscopic assessment , usually prior to cataract surgery or complex refractive surgery or to monitor corneal degenerative conditions
