Dry Eye

A seminal study by Dr Debra Schaumberg of the National Eye Institute in the USA has shown that amongst women 45 years or older those with the highest 20% Omega 3 uptake had a 70% decrease in the risks of dry eye compared those with the lowest 20% intake.

Fish oil is usually the word but omega 3 is the essential component. In fact the source and type of omega 3 are varied. Short chain omega 3 (ALA) are available from fruits and seeds (e. g. blackcurrant, flaxseed), whereas long chain omega 3 (EPA & DHA) are of fish origin. Chronic inflammation of the anterior part of the eye is a significant problem in dry eye; long chains omega 3 contributes to controlling inflammation and symptoms.
