AMD (Macular Degeneration)
AMD is a degenerative process that affects the macula where detailed vision takes place. There are many risk factors to develop AMD; the main risk aging is unavoidable, other risks such as blue light exposure, high fat diet, low anti oxidant can all be influenced.

One aspect of aging is a slowing down of the rate of formation of macular pigments making aging a risk factor. Many studies have shown that supplementation with anti-oxidants and zinc; more recently two specific carotenoids which only concentrate in the macula: lutein and zeaxanthin is beneficial to the production of macular pigments and reducing the risks of AMD. Omega 3 has also been shown to have a synergic benefit on preventing AMD by decreasing inflammation.

At MICHEL GUILLON Vision Clinic the ocular nutrition incorporate the use of a questionnaire to ascertain risks level along with the use of a device to measure macular pigment to establish baseline macular pigment density and monitor the effectiveness of the supplementation programme put in place for the patient.
