Types of Contact Lenses
Types of Contact Lenses
In an effort to optimise the fitting of each patient, contact lenses from all the leading manufacturers and also from selected specialist suppliers are fitted at MICHEL GUILLON

Contact lenses are classified in two main ways according to:
•          The type of material they are made from
•          The lens geometry, linked to the type of vision defect to correct

Types of material
•          Gas permeable (also called Rigid Gas Permeable or RGP): these are the small corneal contact lenses
           made of a rigid material
•          Soft (also called hydrogel): they are soft, mold to the eye and contain between 38% and 75% of water.
The oxygen is carried to the eye via the water in the lens.
•          Silicone (also called silicone hydrogel); they are soft but in general less so than soft lenses. They
combine silicone to the hydrogel material. Silicone has the advantage to carry more oxygen to the eye
            than water.

Lens Geometry
•          Spherical lenses: lenses with a single power through out the lens to correct simple myopia (short
            sightedness) or hyperopia (long sightedness)
•          Toric lenses: lenses with a variable power in different directions to correct astigmatism; contrary to the
common belief of many patients all levels of astigmatism can be corrected with toric soft contact lenses
           (Link to press cutting)
•          Bifocal lenses (also called multifocal lenses): lenses with two different powers from the centre to the
edge of the lens to correct presbyopia (need for different corrections for distance and near vision).
