Fitting Process
Fitting Process
The contact lens fitting process being customised for each patient, the routines outlined below are only illustrative guidelines. In particular, those patients with complex prescriptions or those with dry eye problems require extra appointments and multiple trials as a matter of routine.

The aim of the fitting process is to ensure that the system selected achieves the best vision possible for as long a period of wear as possible. The fitting process is only terminated when, not only the best type of lens has been identified, but also when the length of wear and the contact lens replacement frequency are finalised. The overall process takes usually one month.

New Wearers

At the first appointment new wearers undergo an eye examination followed by an exhaustive assessment of the tear film, cornea, conjunctiva and eyelids.

From the information gathered the optometrist outlines to the patient the recommended fitting plan: the type of contact lens, contact lens care and modality of wear. Trial fitting for the new contact lenses is then arranged.

At the second appointment the new contact lenses are inserted and their performance judged by the optometrist after a short period of wear. In the vast majority of cases the new wearer can take the contact lenses home for an initial period of wear of several days after being instructed on the handling, wear and care of the contact lenses.

At least two follow-up appointments are necessary, usually after respectively one and four weeks of wear. Complex cases, extended wear and people suffering of dry eyes require more follow up appointments.

Existing Wearers

At the first appointment the fitting of the patient's own contact lenses is assessed. Much is learned from reviewing the patient's contact lens history, lens fitting and lens effects on the eye. It is important that the patient attends having worn their contact lenses for several hours if at all possible.

The contact lenses are then removed and a routine similar to that for new wearers is followed.

The second and subsequent appointments also follow the same routine as for new wearers.
