Contact Lens Replacement
MICHEL GUILLON UNIQUE APPROACH

The selection of the best contact lens is only one step towards successful contact lens fitting. The frequency of replacing the contact lenses is a major component to the ultimate long term contact lens success. The approach is to replace the contact lenses often enough to ensure that their performance is always that of a new lens. Our research work has shown that the replacement frequency for the same type of contact lens varies greatly form patient to patient.

At MICHEL GUILLON we use the manufacturer stated replacement frequency ( e.g. monthly lens) as a general starting guideline and customise the replacement for such lenses from one week to one month as best applicable. In fact our experience is that, for most patients a replacement period shorter than a month is necessary to maintain the same performance and comfort as a new contact lens.

REPLACEMENT MODALITIES

Disposable lenses
Disposable contact lenses are lenses that are used only once and discarded; no lens care system is prescribed or necessary with these lenses as every time a new contact lens is inserted.

•          When used in a daily wear modality the lenses are called Daily Disposable Lenses and changed every   day.
•          When used in an extended wear modality the lenses are called Extended Wear Disposable Lenses and worn without removal for a few days to 30 days.

Frequent replacement lenses
Frequent replacement contact lenses (also called Planned Replacement Lenses or Two Weekly Lenses or Monthly Lenses) are lenses that are worn for a period of time of usually one week to one month before being replaced. A lens care system is prescribed and needs to be used every time the lens is removed.

Conventional lenses
Conventional contact lenses are lenses for which no replacement is scheduled. They represent the standard approach to contact lens replacement up to the end of the 1980s; the contact lenses are replaced when their performance is no longer satisfactory to the patient (e.g. poor vision and /or comfort). At MICHEL GUILLON we never follow this approach either for soft or rigid contact lenses regardless of the complexity of the fit.
